"If you’ve raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in thickets by the Jordan?" (Jeremiah 12:5). Our journey is intended to be more than simply "stumbling" through the days while the world "wears us out.” We are made to experience the thrill of "running with horses” and to navigate life amongst the "thickets." The RWH blog focuses on both the spiritual race of which Jeremiah speaks, and the physical act of running that I absolutely love. In short, it's where "the miles meet the Message" to provide insight, perspective & encouragement that might enable you & I to successfully run either of the races set before us. May our course be purposeful and may we be passionate in our pursuit of the abundant life He desires for us.

Run With The Horses ... I Must!

One of the things that I most enjoy about this little reaching-teaching-holding myself accountable blog page interest of mine, are the comments from those who have "stumbled across" the RWH site. Whether byway of a search engine recommendation or even a mistyped url, I absolutely love to see the comments that begin with, "I was looking for (horses, running, doughnuts, or ______) and I found myself on your page."

I often think of these individuals as kindred spirits with similar passions for discipleship or marathons or, yes, even doughnuts! We share a brief back-and-forth and go about our way. I usually always learn something, and if nothing else, there tends to be a mutual feeling of encouragement from the exchange.

So, where am I going with this?

Well, a few days ago I received the following comment from AY:

Hiya! I worked with a man here in Florida a few years ago who took time off to go to Myanmar with his pastor for 3 weeks. Very significant trip for him. But, not why I'm writing. A fellow runner, I stumbled across your blog and read a little. Thought I'd recommend this one to you for your Wyoming Marathon for obvious reasons: http://www.runwiththehorsesmarathon.com/ It was beautiful and a lot of fun. Run happy!

First, thank you so much AY, you reaffirm the kindred spirits element. And when I think about the hundreds, and often thousands, of AY's who collect within the marathon starting corrals, I am reminded of the 'happy place' effect of that moment; the "we're in this together" moment.

Secondly, are you kidding me? A Run With The Horses Marathon! In the words of ol' George McFly, "It's my density."

Located in the high desert of southern Wyoming (Green River, WY to be exact), the RWTH Marathon is an out-and-back, high altitude (7,500' +/-), mostly off-road course among many of the 6,000 state-wide wild horses. There is an uphill to start, then it plateaus before returning back downhill. It would certainly not be easy, but just look at these pictures - who cares if it's easy!

Now the really fun part. Twenty-five years ago this summer, my lovely bride and I enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon in (guess where) .... Wyoming. We rode horses, whitewater rafted, and took in all of the natural beauty and wildlife. What better way to celebrate our 25th, right? The race is August 20th and there is a 10k which I am certain, am positive, am hopeful that my wife will run. I'm pretty sure she sees the romantic twist of fate with this recent revelation!

Whether it's this year, or as celebrate our 50th in a few more years, Run With The Horses Marathon will definitely be my Wyoming race - it has to be. Stay tuned.
