"If you’ve raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses? If you stumble in safe country, how will you manage in thickets by the Jordan?" (Jeremiah 12:5). Our journey is intended to be more than simply "stumbling" through the days while the world "wears us out.” We are made to experience the thrill of "running with horses” and to navigate life amongst the "thickets." The RWH blog focuses on both the spiritual race of which Jeremiah speaks, and the physical act of running that I absolutely love. In short, it's where "the miles meet the Message" to provide insight, perspective & encouragement that might enable you & I to successfully run either of the races set before us. May our course be purposeful and may we be passionate in our pursuit of the abundant life He desires for us.

Dave’s Top 5 Running Quotes

Lists of quotes, sayings, verses, parables, song lyrics and inspirational proverbs on the subject of running are numerous. A quick search yields thousands of them.  Below are the ones that come to my mind first when asked to recite a favorite.  Of course, on any given day a particular quote will be more important to recall than another, but as best as possible the list is provided in the order for which I find motivation. Hope you enjoy.  Feel free to leave your own as a comment.

#5.  "The challenge and the energy that running requires may be a selfish one, but it actually motivates me to be stronger in my relationships." - Joan Benoit Samuelson

#4.  "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift" - Steve Prefontaine

#3.  "Now you wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows.  From that day on, if I was ever going somewhere, I was running!" - Forrest Gump

#2.  "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up.  It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed.  Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up.  It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.  It doesn't really matter whether you're a lion or gazelle ..... when the sun comes up, you'd better be running!" - Herb Caen

#1.  He said, "Come what may, I want to run." So Joab said, "Run!" Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite. - Joab / 2 Samuel 18:23

I'll leave you with one final bonus quote that I just saw a few days ago. Haven't had enough time to consider its place in the top 5, 10 or 20 list, but it might just make it someday. It speaks directly to me and is a constant reminder after years of not following its advice.  From Scott Douglas of Running Times:

"In the first half of the race, don't be an idiot.  In the second half, don't be a wimp!"  (That might just be a great approach to those first forty years and these next forty. A pre-game and half-time pep talk!)

  1. David, Some great quotes here - thanks for sharing and for inspiring.

It really got me thinking about my favourite quotes. I pulled them together in this post

You'll see I've added a link to you (and a couple of other bloggers) to say thanks for the inspiration. I'd love to know what you think.

Let's keep running like those lions and gazelles!

    All the best
